Mokugyo, Inkins & Case Gongs From the steady "heartbeat" of the makugyo (fish drum) to the resounding "bong" on the large case or an energizing run on an inkin (bell), the language of the instruments used in Zen underscores the activities of practitioners at any given moment. Small and large bells, wooden blocks and clappers, cymbals, and even a conch are used to punctuate different aspects of the liturgy, from bowing, to eating, to the beginning and ending of a meditation or work period. We understand that, like most practitioners of Zen, you may not live in a Monastery or training center. For this reason, we have carefully selected our instruments to help you strengthen your home practice by creating a dojo right in your living room. Use a small inkin or our meditation timer to mark your zazen periods and accompany your chanting with the beat of the makugyo. Our offerings are simple, but it is our hope that they will encourage you to explore and deepen the powerful practice of Zen liturgy, helping you, in the words of John Daido Loori Roshi, to "make visible the invisible."
